English opval

OPVAL Document #1

The author and creator of this document is General Nelson A. Miles. Miles was the secretary of war. He publishes this document in 1890 and since this document was talking bad about the U.S. government in the least harsh way possible it was most likely not put out to the public. The document was a primary source and it was a report on the Sioux tribe and what when on in this time period.  This document was published from the report of the secretary of war for 1891, vol. 1, pp, 133, 134, and 149.

This document exist to show what the "Sioux Outbreak" was and how it happened. Miles created this document to show what really happened to the Sioux and how the U.S. government was not acting right and not keeping promises. he chooses this format i think just to document what the government was doing and what happened in that time period.  I dont think there is any intended audience for this document seeing as i believe that is was not shown to the public. This document is all about the government and what they did to the Sioux population. The government back then wanted to kill off the population of indians or Native Americans. Even though the promises were to feed and cloth the Native Americans and give them homes the government didnt like that idea. So the U.S. started killing off the buffalo which was the NA food source. The gov. was also putting these Indians on bad land. what i mean is the Indians could not grow crops on these lands because of the poor soil. The gov. was breaking all of its promises to the Sioux tribe.

I can tell that the author did not think very well of the U.S. govenment at this point and he thought the things they were doing was bad. We can tell that the time period of this piece took place in the 1890s because it is talking about the Sioux tribe and reservations and when the U.S. was expanding west.

  1. Good first OPVL attempt. In terms of audience, even if the audience is not the general public, which I definitely agree with, we can assume people working within the gov't would be reading this document, perhaps in order to inform future decisions concerning policy towards Native Americans.

Also, didn't get much in terms of value and purpose here...so we're reading a top-secret gov't document with how they really thought about things! Unique and valuable perspective, eh? Ya know, stuff like that.

Alright, we'll have so much OPVL practice, so I'll leave it at that for now :)
